Case Study: The Mason Foundation

Mentorship Partner: The Mason Foundation

Beneficiary Focus: Neurodivergent Individuals (Aged 16–25)

Mentor: Simon Nicholson

Overview

The Mason Foundation is dedicated to empowering communities, reducing inequalities, and promoting inclusive vocational development. Through programmes such as Propel, which supports neurodivergent young people into employment, and The Community Mile, which encourages physical activity and community connection, the Foundation helps vulnerable young people live happier, healthier, and more fulfilled lives.

The Propel programme, accredited for CPD, addresses the critical employment gap for neurodivergent individuals - while 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent, only 22% of autistic adults and just 4.8% of people with learning disabilities are in paid employment.

Why This Project Matters

This initiative advances The Different Foundation’s AI for All programme by integrating AI with inclusive vocational support for neurodivergent users. It tackles key challenges by:

  • Embracing Diversity: Designing an AI chatbot that celebrates different ways of thinking and learning rather than enforcing neurotypical communication norms.

  • Empowering the Underrepresented: Creating digital pathways for communities historically excluded from traditional employment opportunities.

  • Shaping an Inclusive Future: Embedding Propel’s CPD-accredited methodology into AI career guidance tools, making neurodivergent belonging a standard feature.

  • Addressing Digital Bias: Training the AI system on neurodivergent experiences and communication patterns to ensure it serves everyone equitably.

  • Elevating Diverse Voices: Amplifying neurodivergent perspectives in AI development so their strengths and needs directly inform the technology’s evolution.

Creating Scalable, Multi-Layered Impact

  • Neurodivergent young people (16–25) gain tailored AI-driven mentorship and career guidance

  • Employers and educators receive tools to better support inclusive pathways

  • AI technology is informed by lived experiences of neurodivergent users, reducing bias and promoting accessibility

A Model for the Future

By embedding inclusivity into AI and mentorship, The Mason Foundation demonstrates how technology and vocational support can work hand-in-hand to empower neurodivergent communities. This project exemplifies a future where career pathways and AI tools are accessible, equitable, and designed for everyone.
